Since last week our idea for the game has gone through multiple revisions and changes. We have been introduced to NavMeshes in Unity and have briefly tested the way it functions and what is possible with it. We have also had our formal presentation and received more feedback and recommendations from our instructors, which will be addressed and changed accordingly. It is good to see that the ideas from all team members have been taken into account to create a more appealing game. Although, it is frustrating that most of these changes are made during class and are reviewed on a “weekly” basis, this is because of my lack of initiative to engage with the team members outside of class to really focus on what the game is going to be, what it needs, what it should not have, etc. Regardless, I am satisfied with the way the idea for the game is so far.
We have also submitted our first document, the high-level game design document. Which was led by two of our team members and then reviewed by the rest of the team. I believe this is a good way of performing this kind of task as it allows more than one point of view, and allows other team members to focus on other areas. As more tasks are assigned team members will be rotating on what part they will be the lead in.
I have also worked on a prototype for the first submission and it was confusing on what the prototype should show exactly so I choose simple movement and camera controls, since it is a 3rd person game. I creating various ways of controlling the camera but they were not smooth or produced the wrong behaviour. I should have put in more effort to find solutions or alternatives. Luckily one of the other team members was working on a prototype as well which had movement and camera controls, as well as a simple animation, so i suggested that he would lead this weeks prototype.
It was very nice to see some of the visual designs for the characters, monsters, environments from the animation team as it motivated me towards creating something that will impress people. An important aspect we will all be looking into is implementing animations into our game, and the different approaches we can take, specifically in Unity.
For the next week we do not have a formal submission but we will continue working on the character controller, nav meshes, and looking into how we can bring our previous behaviour tree into this new project.
