Our project has come to a close but I still feel like I have to work on it. We presented our game this week to the public and we received a lot of feedback. I was somewhat satisfied that we were able to present our game that people were able to play but there was still a lot that needed to be done. Unfortunately because of the problems we were facing, my misjudgment regarding how long integration can take, and the lack of an adherence to the project plan, the game felt unfinished. There were various bugs still present from early production, some elements had not even been implemented into the game and the polish and optimization of the game was not there.
I was disappointed with my progress for this project and expected more in 13 weeks with a larger team. I should have held a more proactive role as a team leader and tackled problems the moment I had them. With any concerns and doubts I should have brought them up and possibly avoided having many problems further down the line. I left too much to assumptions by both the programmers and the animators and it led to a few confusions.
We still have some time before the submission is due so we are working on fixing the remaining errors and problems in the game to then submit it. The majority of the people from the team felt proud of what they had worked on and accomplished, but they also agree that it could have been improved. I feel as if most of the elements are already there, with a few days of polishing it could really be a great game.
For the next project I have learned on what I should do as a leader and what I shouldn’t, I have also learned that when the team is large communication is very important and as a result everyone should be crystal clear on what is being made, what isn’t, what was scrapped, and so on and so forth. From a teammate perspective I was happy with what the animation students produced although I feel like they were also facing some issues and that led to various animations being cut and some content was missing, but ultimately they were able to deliver the necessary assets, albeit quite late. For the following group project I will try to get the group more involved and committed to the project so that they are more motivated to work on something that everyone is working towards, instead of two teams making trades.
